Simplex was founded in Gardner, Massachusetts in 1894 and acquired in December 2000 by Tyco International, a diversified, global company that provides vital products and services to customers in more than 60 countries. The history of Grinnell can be traced back to the 1850 founding of Providence Gas & Steam Company. In 1869, Frederick Grinnell bought the majority stake of that company. In 1881, he was awarded a patent for the first automatic sprinkler.
